in the Nilgiris

Coonoor Club, spread over 5 acres in the heart of Coonoor, is a landmark institution in the Nilgiris. Established in 1885 and registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act (S.No. 22 of 1991), it is the prime social club of the region with over 900 members and 80 affiliate clubs across India.

The Club is open to Ladies and Gentlemen of social standing above the age of 21. Business hours are 9 AM to 6 PM daily. Members enjoy world-class facilities, dining, sports and reciprocal access to affiliated clubs nationwide.

As laid down in the Coonoor Club Bye-Laws (registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975).

Social & Community

To provide a club in and around the neighbourhood of Coonoor for the accommodation of Members and their Friends — for the promotion of entertainments and pastimes in connection with the Club.

Sports & Recreation

To promote social interactions amongst Members, encourage sports and games — including lawn tennis, badminton, billiards and indoor sports — and to organise competitions and sporting meets.

Affiliated Club Access

Members enjoy reciprocal access to 80 affiliated clubs across India. Affiliated club members may use Coonoor Club facilities on presentation of their Membership Card and letter of introduction.

To preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Nilgiris — through the reading library, cultural evenings and the maintenance of the Club's 139-year colonial legacy for future generations.

The Founding
Established as the prime social club of Coonoor, spread over 5 acres in the heart of the Nilgiris — a sanctuary of leisure, sport and fellowship.

The Main Clubhouse
The iconic whitewashed colonial building with sweeping verandas, teak-panelled halls and the heritage portico was completed.

Sports Facilities
The heritage lawn tennis courts were inaugurated. The Raj Bar established — teak panelling and leather chesterfields, unchanged to this day.

Post-Independence
The Club transitioned to Indian leadership while preserving all colonial traditions and heritage infrastructure intact.

Registered Society
Formally registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act 1975 (S.No. 22 of 1991). Bye-Laws formalised under the District Registrar, Oottacamund.

Leadership

Managing Committee

The Club is governed by elected Permanent Members who serve voluntarily. The Committee is elected at the Annual General Meeting and holds office until the next AGM.
